The Vietnam War Memorial is made of 46 black granite columns engraved with the names of 790 Oregonians who lost their lives in the war. The names are listed under hometowns, from Albany to Yoncalla, all in capital letters. The columns represent the fractured public opinion Americans had about the war and the support service members received upon returning.
A sculpture made by Portland artist Libby Carruth titled “A Soldier’s Return” greets visitors to the Vietnam War Memorial at the Oregon State Capitol grounds on Friday in Salem. Written in a description, the sculpture of the soldier at the Vietnam War Memorial is meant to convey angst and determination, revealing the ‘invisible wounds’ of war.
